Weird disclaimer about CRT monitors

I was browsing one of the Hardware Announcement Letters I get in my inbox about our new products and came across the note below. I had no idea this was the case, what a weird thing to stumble upon after CRT’s have nearly gone the way of the dinosaur.

Note: Due to the earth’s magnetic field, CRT monitors are manufactured to work in northern, southern, and equatorial regions of the earth and may not produce a satisfactory image when moved between them. Any required adjustment (if possible) is not covered under IWS and may be subject to a chargeable action. The magnetic field does not affect flat-panel LCD monitors and ThinkPad LCD displays.

  1. Tim,

Back in the day… Monitors were built here in RTP. There were special “booths” with a halo around the top of them that produced an electromagnetic field simulating the sourthern hemisphere, so that monitors for markets in both hemispheres could be built in the same location.

Back in the day, there also was a wrecking facility here, that one of my friends worked at. It was a job in the manufacturing division, and the job was literally to wreck surplus computer equipment so that it could be written off, and recycled. They used claw hammers to take apart CRTs, ripping off the plastics, and then knocking off the necks on the back of the tube to release the vaccum before tossing in a bin for glass reclaimation.

  2. And I thought the degausing button would neutralise any anomoly caused by magnetic fields specific to your geographic location!
