Krav Maga Week 1 Impressions
As expected, I love the class and paid my dues for November - no turning back now! The training is practical and fun. It is a great form of exercise and good social opportunity. So far we’ve learned:
- Punching
- Palm strikes
- Headbutts
- Kneeing
- Breaking choke holds
- Various types of kicking
The second class focused almost entirely on kicking. I did reasonably well with the various forms of kicking (from neutral stance, from fighting stance, angled kicks, downward kicks, and roundhouse kicks), but feel like I need some more practice.
I’m hoping once he covers a good spectrum of techniques, that we maybe focus on some of those techniques again. The class is "only" one hour and attendance ranges from 5-10 people give or take, so it feels a little rushed. But I have no vision as to the long-term planning of the class, so maybe this is a series of quick introductions with later honing of the techniques in specific applications.

A decent punching/kicking bag is in my near future. Ones like the "Torso BOB" pictured at right are supposed to be excellent, but are also $300+. There are plenty of the Wavemaster bags (red on the right) on Craig’s List for under $100, so I think that is the logical choice.
What’s next? More classes, and practice at home. The instructor is adding a third class on Saturdays at 11am, which is a perfect spread: Monday, Wednesday, Saturday. I’m going to practice technique and hopefully soon actually hitting on a bag, which will also be a good workout between classes.
