Breaking: stupid kid wrecks fast car
So the news is reporting Hulk Hogan’s son, Nick, had a bad car wreck. I’ve watched their “reality” show a fair amount and have seen how the kid behaves (at least on TV, can’t imagine it’s any better in real life…) and the things he has no respect for in life; first and foremost being his tricked out Toyota Supra.
News report says he wrecked an SUV, but that is definitely a sports coupe with Supra headlights. Anyway, this kid had zero respect for a lot of things, but had definitely had no respect for any of the vehicles he drove on the show. Supra’s can be built-up with a lot of power relatively simply and with that much power, it doesn’t take much to lose control for even an experienced driver.
Jim put it best:
Is there a moral to this story? Maybe it is that we should never take for granted that while the automobile provides us with an immense amount of freedom and fun, it is still a deadly weapon if we don’t show it the respect it deserves.
Then again, maybe it is that we should never take anything for granted and no matter what life hands us always look to the future and where we want to go with it.
There’s a reason why when I went from my <165HP four-door vehicles to my 400HP RWD coupe I took it very easy and respected the car from the moment I took it for a test drive. This is that reason.
P.S. I hope he and his passenger make it out okay. Most people deserve at least one 2nd chance.

When I see some people drive, following too close, cutting in and out of traffic and going fast, I just think that someday they will kill (or seriously injure) themselves or someone else. In my opinion anyone with a moving violation should have to sit through two days of defensive driving videos, besides the fine and the points and all that.

Tim,
I’m getting old. We were going to dinner the other night and I watched this guy in an S10 blazer cutting/swerving through traffic. He was being extremely reckless, and it really didn’t buy him anything. I pulled up behind him at the stoplight on the exit ramp coming off the beltline. I jotted down his tag and thought about calling it in as a complaint. Wow. When did I get old? While I never swerved through traffic like that (always paranoid about clipping a car - don’t trust myself), I did plenty of stupid things when I was around 20. I made it through them, and hopefully the majority of people will too. Some close calls will release enough adreneline so that your legs get wobbly afterward, but I think it really takes one significant crash to convince some people that it isn’t a video game, and the results are real. I’m not going to blame technology, but I’ll note that the more sophisticated our cars become, with traction control, yaw control, etc, they get us out of more situations that would otherwise typically develop at lower speeds. As a result, when a driver’s bad judgement eventually overcomes all the failsafes, increasingly it is now at a speed where the results are more severe. Anyway, just my musings. I guess it’s like the adult beverage commercial says “enjoy responsibly”.

You’re not that old Mark. I’ve seen people I’ve considered doing the same too, but I know it won’t do any good enforcement-wise.
In the end it’s all the luck of the draw. Are you lucky enough to make it through today’s boneheaded mistake? If you make it, are you smart enough to learn from your stupidity? If you’re not smart enough, you’ll eventually take yourself out of the gene pool.
