The NY Times has an interesting article on high tech auto theft, showing that even the most modern factory security systems don’t stop today’s high tech thieves.

Another kind of surprising tidbit from the article is that illegal street racing, auto theft, and insurance claims can go hand-in-hand: think Fast & Furious meets Gone in 60 Seconds. Out near LA, they recently broke up a weekly illegal street race that also involved people betting parts of their cars in the race. Got a nice set of wheels, a hot engine, or trick suspension? Apparently it is all valid to put down on the race, and when the losers lose their parts, they go crying to the insurance companies. Remember that next time you pay your premium
