TG Daily - AMD’s four-three strategy to beat Intel
I came across a surprisingly good article on “tgdaily,” one of the many offshoots from the original Tom’s Hardware. I normally abhor their articles for many reasons, but this one was rather good and I realized why when I read the disclaimers, it is written by renowned industry analyst Rod Enderle.
Anyway, if anyone wants a crash course in the computer CPU industry, take a look at this article. It gives you an in-depth look at AMD’s current struggles and how they’re going to try to overcome them, but at the same time gives you a brief overview of where AMD and Intel have been. I found it rather insightful.
It seems as if Rob isn’t trying to support or disprove AMD’s strategy as much as he is just explaining what they spieled him. OK sounds all well and good, but the bottom line is that they don’t have competitive products right now. They had a strong showing with Turion 64 X2 in the mobile arena, but that ended quickly with Core Duo and Core 2 Duo from Intel. If you can’t compete in mobile computing, you can’t compete. On top of that, AMD doesn’t have nearly the manufacturing capacity Intel does, which means it costs more for them to make less product - a major downfall in CPU fabrication.

Nice reading! I wonder do you consider point 1 “Devalue Intel Brand” (and the way AMD is doing it) as playing dirty. I guess it’s hard playing the part of David against today´s Goliaths.
Personally I’m fond to AMD, my last 3 Desktop Processors have been AMDs (and in the unlikely event of purchasing another desktop next would be AMD as well). After frying a couple processors in the past (in my heavy 3D rendering times) I grew fond of the brand by its own merits.
I think their relation with OEM is key. And I also think the anti-trust initiatives play a major role in that relationship; as a matter of fact, several OEMs are mentioned in the lawsuit. This could either backfire or prove to be the single item that can leverage their competitive situation.
